人を用うるは、猶お匠の木を用いるがごとし

人を用うるは、猶お匠の木を用いるがごとし。(『十八史略』春秋戦国　魯)

聖人が人を用いるにあたっては、まるで大工が木を用いるように、長所をとって短所を捨てる。

In using people, a saint is like a carpenter using wood, taking the strong points and discarding the weak points.
